OMAFRA: Subsoiling a practice for severe compaction?

Post-harvest is a good time to engage in soil management practices like applying manure and seeding cover crops. One practice that might appeal to those with severe compaction problems is subsoiling – breaking up and loosening the soil at depths below what the average tillage implements can reach. But is this deeply disruptive practice worth it?

The Field Crop Team with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA) state that subsoiling should be a “last resort” option to restore function in severely damaged soil, and should not be a necessary and regular part of a cropping system. |READ MORE
